EPISODE  #1

ft. Ankush Saikia

Ankush Saikia, a prolific author known for his gripping crime thrillers, shared insights into his writing journey in an engaging interview. Born in Tezpur and celebrated for works like The Girl from Nongrim Hills, Mr. Saikia has carved a niche in Indian literature by blending compelling narratives with evocative settings.

Reflecting on his start, Mr. Saikia revealed his initial intention wasn’t to become a crime writer. Instead, his passion for storytelling naturally led him to explore darker themes. His Arjun Arora series exemplifies this, with a detective navigating a chaotic society. He emphasized the importance of setting, describing how places like Shillong and Delhi provide a solid foundation for his narratives. Familiarity with locations allows him to weave authentic details, making his stories immersive.

Mr. Saikia’s approach to writing involves a blend of instinct and structure. He begins with a rough outline, refining it as the story unfolds. While writer’s block isn’t a challenge he faces, finding the right narrative approach can sometimes require multiple attempts. His characters often grapple with inner demons, which he believes adds depth and relatability. Interestingly, he admits that while his antagonists are pivotal, the protagonists’ journeys are often the focal point.

Discussing the evolving publishing landscape, Mr. Saikia shared the challenges of gaining visibility amidst the digital age. While traditional publishing remains his preferred route, he has ventured into self-publishing. He advises new writers to remain persistent, view writing as a craft, and not shy away from promoting their work creatively.

Mr. Saikia’s parting words to aspiring writers? Trust your instincts, write consistently, and treat writing as a skill to master over time. For readers and writers alike, his journey is a testament to the enduring power of stories that resonate with heart and authenticity.
