Jeon HeyJin
A South Korean novelist and essayist. Her work spans nonfiction that brings to light the lives and voices of women from the past, as well as fiction that examines marginalisation and discrimination. While researching traditional Korean folktales as part of her creative practice, she came to write Women Become Ghosts and Goddesses, a work rooted in the intersections of folklore, history, and gender.
Her erudite essay collection Mad Women in the Boudoir sheds light on women figures from classical Korean literature, folktales, and oral traditions, foregrounding their bold and often revolutionary lives. These figures resonate within a broader context of female hero myths across Asia.
Her science fiction short story “Pachok, Thirty Thousand Li” received a Special Prize at Chengdu in 100 Years, the competition held as part of the 5th Chengdu International Science Fiction Conference in China.
Selected Works & Awards: Stories of Yeonhee, Women Become Ghosts and Goddesses; Mad Women in the Boudoir ; Why We Loved Mathematics ; 280 Days, among others. Winner of the 1st Daewon CI Novel Contest (2007) with her debut novel. Winner of a science fiction writing contest organised by Science Fiction World (China), 2019. Author of the children’s book Marie Curie from My Class, about the Polish scientist Maria Skłodowska-Curie.
