Ellipses in the Toddling Sand

Latshmihar

Translated by:  Rehana Sulthana

Ellipses in the Toddling Sand is the translation of Latshmihar’s short story, Nadakka Katru Konda Mannin Nirutha Kurigal. This short story, nitpicked from the 2025 Sahitya Akademi Award (Yuva Puraskar)- winning anthology, Koothondru Kooditru, is a compelling account of love, loss, and agony. This story immensely affected me from the very first line with its exploration of the complicated relationship between the narrator and his unwanted guest. The man the narrator hates is also someone he loved dearly once, and in the process of discovering the intricacies of their relationship, he also exposes some unsettling truths. He is now at a crossroads between vengeance and clemency. Latshmihar’s delicate yet complex tale is an amazing work of art and is truly timeless. Reading and translating this story is a journey I will carry with me forever.
