Saltier Than Sea
Sri Bimalendu Halder
Translated by: Dr. Madhumita Chanda
Lobonakta' is a short story written by Bimalendu Haldar. It chronicles the
trials and tribulations of the fishing community of the Sunderban islands. It
depicts the fiery resistance of the Dalit women who decide to go downriver in
search of their missing husbands. The apathy of the mahajan transforms the
helplessness of the women into collective resistance. The story marks the
complexity of how caste, class and gender intersect and perform in their daily
lives. It also shows that when pushed to the brink, the seemingly wimpy
women script their own Dalit solidarity.
